Tide vs Arm & Hammer: is Clean Burst worth switching to?

Unlabeled orange and yellow detergent bottles beside a dosing cap and blue cotton shirt.

The cheaper detergent is tempting until you start wondering what the price difference leaves out. With Tide and Arm & Hammer, one useful starting point is easy to miss: Clean Burst liquid is a complete laundry detergent. It is not a bottle of baking soda, and you do not need to buy a second detergent simply because baking soda appears on its label.

The short answer: Arm & Hammer Clean Burst has the lower cost per advertised load in the retailer listings we retrieved. Tide Original has a different disclosed formula, including several enzymes. That difference alone does not establish how much cleaner your clothes will be. If Clean Burst meets your needs at its directed dose and you like the scent, it is a reasonable lower-cost option to consider.

Research note: Freshly Folded checked U.S. manufacturer disclosures and retailer listings on September 5, 2026. We did not conduct a head-to-head wash test. Prices below are retrieved from listing snapshots, not local checkout quotes.

Start with the right two bottles

This comparison concerns Tide Original liquid and Arm & Hammer Clean Burst HE liquid. It does not compare Tide Simply, Tide PODS, Arm & Hammer Plus OxiClean, Odor Blasters, powder, or either brand’s fragrance-free products. A result for one of those alternatives cannot automatically be applied here.

There is a packaging mismatch to watch for. The manufacturer’s Clean Burst page still shows a 105-load package, while the retailer lists a 110-ounce, 110-load bottle. Check the bottle in your cart. Do not pair a price for one size with the load count from another.

What baking soda does — and does not — tell you

The Church & Dwight Clean Burst disclosure lists several surfactants alongside sodium carbonate, sodium bicarbonate, fragrance, colorant, and an optical brightener. It identifies bicarbonate as a pH adjuster. Baking soda is one component of a formulated product, not its entire cleaning system.

The same disclosure lists no enzyme. By contrast, Tide’s UPC-specific ingredient record includes subtilisin, amylase, cellulase, and mannanase. That is a verifiable formula distinction, not a stain-removal score. An ingredient list does not tell us the effective concentration of each ingredient or the outcome for a particular garment.

There is also a date limit: the named Clean Burst disclosure is dated April 2024, whereas the Tide record was updated in March 2026. The newer Clean Burst retail listing corroborates the main ingredient categories, but the older manufacturer record is not proof that every batch is unchanged. Match the current package when an ingredient matters to your purchase.

In practical terms, the choice is between two complete detergents, not between detergent and an additive. If you are shopping for a separate spot treatment, that is a different decision; our guide to stain-remover types explains the options without making the bottle color the deciding factor.

What the price difference actually buys

The retrieved Target Tide HE listing displayed $12.99. The 110-load Clean Burst listing displayed $9.19. These are product-specific online snapshots retrieved on September 5, not a store-specific availability or price promise. Tax, delivery, coupons, and membership benefits are excluded.

Detergent cost using those listing prices and advertised counts
MeasureTide OriginalClean Burst
Bottle price$12.99$9.19
Cost per advertised load20.30 cents8.35 cents
Illustrative cost for 20 baseline loads$4.06$1.67

The arithmetic is bottle price divided by advertised loads. In this sample, the difference is about 12 cents per baseline load, or $2.39 over an assumed 20-load month. That turns an eye-catching bottle-price gap into a household amount you can weigh against convenience and your own results.

Advertised counts are not a promise that every family gets that many washes. Larger or dirtier loads can require a different directed dose. As a calculation only, using twice the baseline volume would halve each bottle’s effective count: 32 Tide loads or 55 Clean Burst loads, costing 40.59 and 16.71 cents respectively. This example is not an instruction to double the detergent.

Use the dose on your actual bottle for your washer and load. If your routine differs between products, record the washes you get rather than assuming the same multiplier for both. For another value-bottle comparison, Purex versus Tide works through how extra laundry costs can change the savings.

Do you need to pay more for your stains?

There is no matched current-bottle test in this research that answers whether it works for every stain. The manufacturers’ amplified cleaning claims use their own comparison conditions; they are not a neutral Tide-versus-Clean-Burst scoreboard.

Make the purchase decision around the actual problem. If your usual washable clothes come out satisfactorily with Clean Burst, a more expensive bottle is not automatically necessary. If one recurring stain remains, identify the mark and the garment’s care instructions before changing the whole routine. Our Shout and Spray ‘n Wash comparison is relevant when the unresolved choice is a pretreatment spray.

Both manufacturers support cold-water use for the liquids discussed here. That is permission for an intended use, not assurance that a cold quick cycle will remove every mark. Keep the washer cycle and load appropriate for the garment; do not compensate for an unsuitable care routine by guessing at a larger pour.

If you want to compare Tide with another mainstream liquid before buying, the Tide and Persil article examines the limits of stain evidence. For readers whose main decision is scent preference, Tide versus Gain Original is the closer comparison.

If fragrance-free is a requirement, change the shortlist

Neither bottle here is fragrance-free. A baking soda ingredient does not change that. The American Academy of Dermatology’s advice for children with eczema recommends fragrance- and dye-free detergent. For that separate decision, use our Tide Free & Gentle versus all free clear guide, rather than treating this scented-liquid comparison as a skin-tolerance recommendation.

Detergent preference when someone else handles the laundry

If choosing a bottle is easier than finding time to use it, Freshly Folded’s wash-and-fold service includes Tide among its detergent choices without an additional detergent charge. Arm & Hammer is not on the published menu. Ask before booking if Clean Burst specifically is essential; availability or accommodation is not automatic.

Start by checking your address against our served areas. Our pickup-and-delivery service returns laundry the next business day. Standard weekly washing is $2.49 per pound; on-request washing is $2.69 per pound, with a $49.99 minimum order and a $5.99 pickup charge. Review current service plans and confirm the stocked formula before you schedule a pickup.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Arm & Hammer Clean Burst just baking soda?

No. Clean Burst liquid is a formulated laundry detergent with surfactants and other ingredients. Baking soda is one ingredient; buying the detergent is not the same as adding plain baking soda to a wash.

Is Arm & Hammer cheaper than Tide per load?

In the retrieved listing sample, Clean Burst costs 8.35 cents per advertised load versus 20.30 cents for Tide Original. Your price, package, and directed dose can change that comparison.

Does Tide clean better because it lists enzymes?

The enzyme disclosure establishes an ingredient difference, not a universal cleaning result. This research does not include a matched test proving how much better either current liquid removes a particular stain.

Why do some Clean Burst pages say 105 loads and others 110?

The manufacturer page checked still describes a 105-load package, while the retailer lists a newer 110-ounce, 110-load bottle. Calculate cost using the size and count on the same product you are buying.

Is this comparison about Tide Simply?

No. It compares Tide Original liquid with Arm & Hammer Clean Burst liquid. Tide Simply and the other product lines need their own package, formula, and price checks.

Can I request Arm & Hammer at Freshly Folded?

Arm & Hammer is not listed among the included detergent choices. Ask before booking if that brand is a requirement. Tide is listed, but confirm the exact stocked formula when a specific variant matters.
