If you’ve ever pulled a shirt out of the dryer and immediately started scratching, you already know this topic matters. And if you’ve spent the last six months cycling through detergent brands trying to figure out which one is making your skin react, you’re not alone. Detergent-related skin irritation is one of the most common dermatological complaints in the United States.
The two detergents that come up most in this conversation are Tide (the best-selling laundry detergent in the country) and All Free & Clear, the go-to recommendation from dermatologists for anyone with sensitive skin. They’re built for different priorities, and understanding what’s actually in each one will save you a lot of trial and error.
We stock both at Freshly Folded, along with three other options. Every customer picks their detergent when scheduling a wash and fold pickup, and you can change your selection every single time. But before you choose, here’s what you’re actually choosing between.
Want to choose your own detergent? Freshly Folded offers 5 options, including All Free & Clear and 7th Generation. Schedule pickup →

Verdict: The current evidence does not establish one universal winner. Both named liquids are free of perfumes and dyes, and both product families have National Eczema Association and National Psoriasis Foundation recognition. The practical choice depends on the exact format, current label, garment instructions, price, and the wearer’s needs.
Most pickup services run a single industrial detergent because rotating between options is logistically expensive. We took the opposite approach — our San Diego laundry pickup service ships with all five detergent options on the truck, so you choose what touches your skin.
Both Tide and All Free & Clear are surfactant-based detergents. Surfactants are the molecules that do the actual cleaning. They attach to dirt and oil particles and pull them away from fabric fibers so water can rinse them out. Both detergents use effective surfactant systems. Both contain enzymes. The cleaning machinery is similar.
Where they differ is everything else in the formula.
The comparison must stay tied to the exact products named here. The current Tide Free & Gentle Liquid page describes that formula as free of dyes and perfumes. Claims about the color or fragrance in regular Tide should not be transferred to Tide Free & Gentle.
The current All Free & Clear Original Liquid page describes that formula as 100% free of perfumes and dyes. Related liquids, concentrates, and packs can use different formulas, so the package name and current ingredient disclosure should decide the comparison.
Both products use cleaning ingredients, but an ingredient list alone cannot prove that one removes stains better, leaves less residue, or produces the same result in every washer. No neutral head-to-head test of the current liquids was supplied for this article.
All Free & Clear strips all of that out. No fragrance compounds. No dyes. No optical brighteners. The surfactants and enzymes stay. Those are what actually clean your clothes. Everything that exists purely for scent or visual appeal is removed.
The enzymes in both detergents deserve a quick explanation because people with sensitive skin sometimes worry about them. Enzymes are proteins that break down specific types of stains: proteases break down protein-based stains (blood, grass, sweat), amylases break down starches (food), and lipases break down fats and oils. They’re biological cleaning agents, and they’re effective.
The short version: Tide cleans and adds scent, color, and brightening effects. All Free & Clear cleans and stops there.
Most searches that land on this page ask one of four questions, and the jugs answer most of them. This is what each label and ingredient list said when we checked them on October 8, 2026.
| Tide Free & Gentle (liquid) | All Free & Clear Original (liquid) | |
|---|---|---|
| Perfumes and dyes | None added | None added |
| Enzymes on the ingredient list | Four: subtilisin (a protease), amylase, cellulase, mannanase | None |
| Cold water | Label says it is designed to clean even in cold water | No cold-water claim on the brand’s product page |
| Seals | National Eczema Association, National Psoriasis Foundation and EPA Safer Choice, listed on the label | National Eczema Association Seal of Acceptance and National Psoriasis Foundation Seal of Recognition |
| Preservative | Benzisothiazolinone | Benzisothiazolinone |
Neither brand calls its detergent non-toxic, and that is the honest position. Under the FTC’s Green Guides, a “non-toxic” claim tells shoppers a product is safe for people and for the environment, and the company has to be able to prove both. Tide Free & Gentle’s own label warns that it is harmful if swallowed and may irritate eyes.
The bigger risk at home is laundry packets. U.S. poison centers took 36,279 calls about liquid laundry packet exposures over three years, and 87% involved children under six, according to a 2024 study in Clinical Toxicology led by Nationwide Children’s Hospital. Gentle on skin is not the same as safe to swallow.
Both are made without perfumes, so neither leaves the familiar Tide scent or the floral finish of a scented detergent. Free of perfume is not quite the same as no smell, though. The FDA points out that some “unscented” cosmetics contain a trace of fragrance only to cover the smell of their other ingredients, which tells you those ingredients have a smell of their own. A faint smell from the base formula is normal, and it is not added fragrance.
This is the clearest difference between the two. Tide Free & Gentle lists four enzymes. All Free & Clear Original lists eight ingredients, water first, and none of them is an enzyme.
Enzymes each do one job. Proteases remove protein stains, amylases remove starch-based food stains and cellulases trim the tiny cotton fibers that build up on worn fabric, as the science-teaching journal Science in School explains. Enzymes also help a detergent clean at lower temperatures, which is why Tide can say Free & Gentle works in cold water.
Odor follows the same logic. Neither formula adds fragrance to cover a smell, so the smell has to wash out. For workout clothes, kitchen towels and sheets that come out stale, the enzyme formula is the better fit. If you prefer All, the brand also sells a free clear Odor Relief version whose ingredient list adds hydroxypropyl cyclodextrin.
Less than it sounds. The FDA says no federal standard or definition governs “hypoallergenic” on cosmetics, and that the term “means whatever a particular company wants it to mean.” All Free & Clear prints it on the jug. It is a brand claim, not a test result.
Two checks are more useful. Both detergents carry National Eczema Association and National Psoriasis Foundation recognition. And if a patch test has shown you react to a specific ingredient, read the list: both contain benzisothiazolinone, a preservative that the dermatology reference DermNet lists as a cause of allergic contact dermatitis in people already sensitized to it. For a known allergy, the ingredient list beats the front label.
When you book wash and fold with Freshly Folded, you pick the detergent at scheduling, and every load also gets ArtiClean ozone in the wash water.
Tide Free & Gentle may fit a household that already uses the exact product comfortably, finds it at an acceptable current price, and needs a perfume-free and dye-free option. Its manufacturer publishes cleaning claims, but those claims are not an independent comparison against the exact All liquid reviewed here.
This article therefore does not promise stronger stain removal for children’s clothes, athletic wear, grease, or any other load. Follow the product dose, garment-care label, and pretreatment instructions rather than relying on a brand-wide ranking.
All Free & Clear Original Liquid may fit a household that prefers its exact ingredient disclosure, product recognition, current price, or prior experience with the formula. Its manufacturer describes the product as free of perfumes and dyes and displays National Eczema Association, National Psoriasis Foundation, and EPA Safer Choice recognition.
Those facts do not make the detergent a treatment for eczema, psoriasis, contact dermatitis, allergies, or surgical wounds. A persistent or worsening skin problem belongs with a qualified clinician, and a detergent change should not be used as a home diagnostic test.
For infant laundry, the separate Dreft, All Free & Clear, and Tide Free & Gentle comparison explains why the exact Dreft formula matters and separates scented Dreft Stage 1 from Dreft Free & Gentle.
Freshly Folded also lists Gain, 7th Generation, and Persil. These are separate product families, not fixed positions on a gentleness or cleaning-power scale. If a precise ingredient or certification matters, confirm the stocked SKU and compare its current package rather than transferring a claim across the whole brand.
The Seventh Generation and ECOS comparison examines two specific fragrance-free liquids, their current ingredient disclosures, and their product-specific certifications. It does not infer a performance winner from plant-derived content.
This Tide article should not rank Gain, 7th Generation, or Persil by scent, skin suitability, environmental impact, or stain removal without a dated product review and documented test.
Detergent is one part of a wash result. Product format, dose, stain treatment, load size, water, cycle, washer, fabric, and drying conditions can all affect the outcome.
No controlled test of the exact Tide Free & Gentle and All Free & Clear liquids was supplied for this article. Do not state that their cleaning power is identical or that one is categorically stronger. Manufacturer performance language should remain attributed to the manufacturer.
Freshly Folded’s separate article about ozone in the laundry process covers that process within its own cited scope. Ozone does not supply evidence for a Tide-versus-All cleaning verdict.
Freshly Folded lists five detergent choices: Tide, Gain, All Free & Clear, 7th Generation, and Persil. Customers select from the listed menu during scheduling. If an exact SKU or a detergent outside that menu matters, confirm availability and handling with the team before booking.
Keep this section focused on Freshly Folded’s documented process. Remove generalizations about competitors’ purchasing, container sizes, liability policies, and customer handling unless a current source is attached.
The American Academy of Dermatology’s guidance for children with eczema recommends fragrance-free rather than merely unscented products and specifically mentions fragrance-free, dye-free laundry detergent.
Its clothes-washing guidance also advises using the recommended amount of detergent, allowing enough water for adequate rinsing, washing new clothes before wear, and considering whether scented fabric softener or dryer sheets contribute to irritation.
This is general wash-routine guidance, not proof that detergent caused a rash or that any one brand will suit everyone. The National Eczema Association directory should be checked by exact product name and format. Persistent, worsening, painful, blistering, or infected-looking skin should be assessed by a clinician.
Start with the full product name and format, then compare the current package with the manufacturer page and any certification directory being cited. Follow the detergent dose and garment-care instructions.
For price, record the retailer, date, container size, price paid, and stated load count. For cleaning, do not compare two products unless the fabric, stain, dose, water, machine, cycle, and scoring method are controlled.
A detergent change cannot diagnose eczema, psoriasis, contact dermatitis, or fragrance allergy. If a clinician has provided a laundry routine, follow that plan. Otherwise, avoid interpreting a short trial as proof of what caused or resolved a symptom.
Freshly Folded’s current published rates are $2.49 per pound for weekly service and $2.69 per pound for on-demand service, with a $49.99 minimum and a $5.99 pickup charge. Confirm the selected detergent and any special handling request before scheduling.
Picking the right detergent matters. Actually doing the laundry matters more.
Freshly Folded handles the wash and lets you choose from five detergents on

Mark your preference once at checkout, and we use it on every pickup.

Detergent choice sits alongside water temperature, load size, drying time, and how long a damp load sat before it went in. The rest of our laundry writing covers those in more detail.
Freshly Folded lists Tide, Gain, All Free & Clear, 7th Generation, and Persil as detergent choices included without an added detergent charge. If a precise SKU or a detergent outside the menu matters, contact the team before booking to confirm that the request can be accommodated.
Weekly wash and fold is $2.49 per pound, on-demand service is $2.69 per pound, the minimum order is $49.99, and each pickup costs $5.99. Laundry is returned the next business day.
Is Tide Free & Gentle or All Free & Clear better?
It depends on what you wash. Tide Free & Gentle lists four stain-fighting enzymes, so it is the stronger pick for food and protein stains on everyday clothes. All Free & Clear Original lists eight ingredients and no enzymes, so it suits people who want the shortest formula. Both are free of perfumes and dyes, and both carry National Eczema Association and National Psoriasis Foundation recognition.
Is Tide Free & Gentle non-toxic?
Not in the sense of safe to swallow. Its label warns that it is harmful if swallowed and may irritate eyes. The label does list EPA Safer Choice, which means the EPA reviewed every ingredient against its safety criteria before the product could carry the logo.
Is All Free & Clear non-toxic?
The brand does not call it non-toxic. It calls it hypoallergenic and free of perfumes and dyes. Like any detergent it should be kept away from children, and laundry packets carry the most risk: U.S. poison centers took 36,279 calls about liquid laundry packet exposures over three years, 87% of them involving children under six.
What does Tide Free & Gentle smell like?
Very little. It is made without perfumes, so clothes do not come out with the usual Tide scent. Detergent ingredients can carry a faint smell of their own, and that is not added fragrance.
Does free and clear detergent remove odors?
It washes odors out rather than covering them, because nothing is added to mask a smell. For gym clothes, towels and sheets, an enzyme formula such as Tide Free & Gentle is the better fit. All also sells a free clear Odor Relief version for odor-prone laundry.
Does All Free & Clear clean as well as Tide?
For stains, Tide Free & Gentle has the edge on paper. Its ingredient list includes four enzymes (subtilisin, a protease, plus amylase, cellulase and mannanase) that target protein and starch stains and help it clean in cold water. All Free & Clear Original lists no enzymes.
What does hypoallergenic mean on a detergent?
Less than it sounds. The FDA says no federal standard defines the word for cosmetics, and on a detergent jug it is likewise a brand claim. If you have a known allergy, check the ingredient list instead: both detergents contain benzisothiazolinone, a preservative that can cause allergic reactions in people sensitized to it.
Is Tide Free & Gentle the same as Tide Free & Clear?
Usually, yes. We could not find a current U.S. Tide product with the exact name Tide Free & Clear, and people searching for it generally mean Tide Free & Gentle. Check the jug, since Tide Fresh & Gentle and Tide Simply Free & Sensitive are different formulas.
What detergent is best for eczema?
The American Academy of Dermatology recommends fragrance-free and dye-free laundry detergent for eczema-prone skin, but it does not name one detergent for everyone. Both of these qualify, and both carry National Eczema Association recognition. If you are being treated, follow your dermatologist’s advice.
Is All Free & Clear dermatologist recommended?
The manufacturer markets all as the number-one detergent brand recommended by dermatologists, allergists and pediatricians for sensitive skin. That is the brand’s own claim. The product also holds the National Eczema Association Seal of Acceptance and the National Psoriasis Foundation Seal of Recognition.
Can I choose a different detergent for each pickup?
Yes. Freshly Folded offers Tide, Gain, All Free & Clear, 7th Generation and Persil, and you pick one when you schedule. If an exact formula matters to you, ask the team which one is stocked.
Can I bring my own detergent to a laundry service?
Ask first. Contact Freshly Folded about the product you would like used before you book, and do not put an unapproved container in your laundry bag.
Is 7th Generation as effective as Tide?
They are different formulas, so compare the exact products. If stain removal matters most, look for enzymes on the ingredient list, and follow each label’s dose.
