Purex vs Tide: what do you save, and what changes?

A large unlabeled blue detergent jug and smaller orange bottle beside a basket of white and terracotta laundry.

A large Purex bottle can make the smaller Tide beside it look expensive. The useful question is not which container holds more liquid. It is how much you spend getting a load of your own clothes acceptably clean, using each product as directed.

Our take: Purex Fresh Mountain Breeze has a substantial detergent-cost advantage in the listings retrieved for this comparison. Tide Original has a different ingredient profile, including disclosed enzymes. Neither the price nor the ingredient count settles the cleaning outcome for your laundry. A switch makes financial sense when the lower detergent spend is not offset by other costs or results you are unhappy with.

Method: This is a source-based U.S. liquid-detergent comparison researched on September 5, 2026, not a Freshly Folded wash test. The cost examples below are calculations. We have not measured household rewash rates or claimed that either product causes them.

The price comparison, with the bottles attached

For Purex, the reference is Fresh Mountain Breeze HE liquid, 150 fl oz and 115 advertised loads, UPC 024200050160. For Tide, it is Original HE liquid, 80 fl oz and 64 advertised loads, UPC 030772121108. These are not pacs, powder, Tide Simply, Purex Advanced Oxi, or fragrance-free versions.

MeasurePurex Fresh Mountain BreezeTide Original
Displayed bottle price$7.99 sale; $8.99 regular$12.99
Advertised loads11564
Cost per advertised load6.95 cents sale; 7.82 cents at $8.9920.30 cents

Retrieved versions of the Purex listing differed: a newer result showed the $7.99 sale, while an older page retrieval showed $8.99. The table exposes both useful price points rather than treating a cached offer as a national price. Verify the amount for your store or delivery address. Tax, shipping, gift cards, coupons, and membership rewards are not included.

At those figures, the Purex advantage is about 12–13 cents per advertised load. It remains the lower detergent cost at either listed Purex price, but this does not establish equal stain removal or equal actual doses for your household.

Turn the shelf saving into a useful household number

Using the $7.99 Purex snapshot, an illustrative 20-load month costs about $1.39 in Purex detergent or $4.06 in Tide detergent at the advertised baseline. The difference is $2.67 when calculated before rounding. That is the amount to consider, rather than assuming a cheaper bottle will materially change the entire household budget.

Now replace the advertised count with your actual use. Write the opening date on a private note, keep a tally of washes, and record the product and price. When the bottle is empty, divide what you paid by the washes it supplied. You do not need to buy both products at once or create extra laundry just to collect that information.

Keep a note of unusual loads so you do not attribute every change to the detergent. A month of larger bedding loads is not directly comparable to a month of small clothing loads. Likewise, a coupon can change the purchase calculation without changing the formula.

When would extra costs cancel the savings?

Here is a sensitivity example, not a prediction. At the sale-price baseline, the savings are approximately $0.133 per load. Suppose a change in your routine adds $1 of extra cost on an affected load, counting whatever additional washing or products actually cost you. The break-even calculation is $0.133 divided by $1, or about 13% of loads.

That does not mean Purex needs rewashing 13% of the time; no such rate was measured. It means an assumed $1 extra cost on roughly one in eight loads would consume this particular detergent saving. If the extra cost is zero, the saving remains. If your time is the concern, consider it separately rather than assigning everyone the same hourly value.

This is also why automatically adding a booster to every wash can defeat a detergent-saving plan. First, identify whether you have a stain problem requiring another product. Our color-safe bleach and OxiClean comparison covers that separate choice; this article does not recommend mixing products or adopting a booster by default.

Purex and Tide are not the same formula under different labels

Purex belongs to Henkel, which identifies the brand on its Fresh Mountain Breeze product page. Tide’s exact-product SmartLabel identifies Procter & Gamble and lists several enzymes as well as fragrance. Different companies and disclosed ingredients rule out treating Purex as merely a relabeled Tide Original.

The Henkel disclosure matching the 150-ounce Purex UPC includes surfactants, sodium carbonate, fragrance, an optical brightener, and a preservative. It lists no enzyme. Its information was confirmed in January 2025, so check your bottle if you are buying around a formula or ingredient change. This is not an all-Purex enzyme-free claim.

Those records help explain what is different, but they cannot quantify the stain-removal gap. They do not give us a neutral result for the same soil, fabric, dose, and cycle. We therefore cannot say that Purex needs twice as much product, that Tide always prevents a second wash, or that one wins on every kind of grease.

If stain evidence is your main reason for considering a switch, our comparison of Tide and Persil Original explains another product choice. For a different value liquid, Tide versus Arm & Hammer Clean Burst addresses the distinction between a baking-soda-containing detergent and a separate additive.

Use the bottle's directions, not a borrowed capful

Purex’s current product page gives level 1 for medium or regular loads and higher cap levels for larger or heavily soiled loads. Follow your physical package and washer instructions if the markings differ. A Tide cap line is not an interchangeable Purex measurement.

Tide Original’s manufacturer page supports cold and quick washing. Purex’s product listing also identifies all-temperature use. Those statements do not override clothing care labels or establish identical results in a short cycle.

For a recurring mark, use our stain-removal product guide to distinguish the treatment decision from the detergent purchase. Avoid changing the detergent, dose, cycle, and pretreatment together if you want to understand which change helped.

Smell and ingredient requirements can settle the decision first

Fresh Mountain Breeze and Tide Original are scented. Fragrance preference is personal; this research does not establish which smells stronger on dry clothes or which scent lasts longer. If scent is what you want to compare, the Tide and Gain guide explores another scented-liquid pairing.

If you require fragrance-free laundry, neither bottle here belongs on that shortlist. The AAD’s guidance for children with eczema calls for fragrance- and dye-free detergent. Our Tide Free & Gentle and all free clear comparison addresses that different decision. Do not use a budget detergent to diagnose a rash.

When the bigger saving is the time spent doing laundry

A lower bottle price does not remove the sorting, washing, and folding. For households ready to hand those tasks over, Freshly Folded offers wash-and-fold laundry in San Diego County. Tide is an included detergent choice; Purex is not on the published menu. Confirm the exact formula, and ask before booking if a non-stocked product is essential.

Check our served locations before arranging laundry pickup with next-business-day return. Standard weekly service costs $2.49 per pound and on-request service $2.69 per pound. The minimum order is $49.99, with a $5.99 pickup fee. Our pricing and plan details explain the service purchase; it is a time-and-convenience decision, not a claim that outsourcing costs less than detergent.

Once coverage and detergent preferences are confirmed, book a Freshly Folded pickup.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Purex cheaper than Tide?

The specific Purex bottle has the lower cost per advertised load in the retrieved listings: 6.95 cents at the $7.99 sale snapshot or 7.82 cents at $8.99, compared with Tide’s 20.30 cents. Verify your checkout price and actual dose.

Is Purex made by the same company as Tide?

No. Purex is a Henkel brand; Tide is a Procter & Gamble brand. The liquids compared here also have different disclosed ingredient profiles.

Does Purex Fresh Mountain Breeze contain enzymes?

No enzyme appears in the manufacturer disclosure checked for UPC 024200050160. That record was confirmed in January 2025. Check the current bottle and manufacturer information rather than extending this finding to every Purex formula.

Should I use more Purex to make it clean like Tide?

Use the Purex package’s directed dose for your load and machine. This research does not establish an extra amount that makes its cleaning equivalent to Tide; pouring more by guesswork is not a supported comparison method.

Is Fresh Mountain Breeze fragrance-free?

No. Fresh Mountain Breeze is scented. Purex Free & Clear is a different product and is not the formula evaluated in this price comparison.

Does Freshly Folded offer Purex?

Purex is not on the published included-detergent menu. Ask before booking if you need that product. Tide is listed without an additional detergent charge, but confirm the exact stocked variant.
