Tide vs Persil: comparing the U.S. Original liquid detergents
A shirt that comes out of the washer with the same mark on it makes switching detergent tempting. But before you trade Tide for Persil, check what the comparison actually covers. A review of an older Persil ProClean bottle, a packet test, and a claim on today’s Original liquid are not necessarily evidence about the same purchase.
Our conclusion: There is not enough matched, current-bottle evidence here to name Tide Original or Persil Original the stronger cleaner. Both are scented liquids marketed for cold-water use. Start with the right U.S. product, follow its dose and stain directions, then compare the cost for the loads you actually wash.

Which Tide and which Persil?
Here, Tide means Tide Original liquid, not Tide Simply, Ultra Oxi, PODS, or Free & Gentle. Persil means the U.S. Persil Original liquid, whose current manufacturer page uses TripleCare branding, not Advanced Clean Oxi + Odor, Activewear, or Free & Sensitive.
Persil’s U.S. site says its ProClean products have been rebranded. Its current product FAQ is useful for navigating those names. Rebranding does not establish that every old formula, package size, dose, or test result applies unchanged.
There is also a label mismatch worth knowing about. The current Persil Original page’s ingredient link opened an older 40-ounce ProClean listing during our check. We therefore did not turn that disclosure into an ingredient inventory for the 84-ounce Original bottle. If you need to avoid a particular ingredient, match the bottle’s UPC to its disclosure or ask the manufacturer.
This is a U.S. comparison. Do not substitute a similarly named Persil product sold in another country without checking its own formula and instructions.

What the stain evidence does — and does not — show
There are three different kinds of information on a detergent-shopping page: what the manufacturer promises, what an independent tester observed, and what another shopper experienced. They can all influence a purchase, but they are not interchangeable.
Good Housekeeping’s testing supports Tide Original’s stain-removal performance. That evidence is useful, but its summary does not establish a current UPC-matched Tide-versus-Persil result.
Read advertising footnotes just as carefully. Tide’s current page explains a claim using one dose against six doses of a leading competing base liquid. Persil qualifies its fabric-care comparison against a leading value detergent. Neither statement is a neutral, same-dose Tide-versus-Persil score.
This leaves a sensible but narrower conclusion: Tide has attributable published testing to consider, while Persil remains an option whose current Original product should be judged on its own directions and performance in your routine. It does not justify claims such as “Persil always wins on grease” or “Tide is stronger on every food stain.”

Before switching: check the dose and stain instructions
A capful is not a shared unit between brands. Tide directs users to the dose on their package. Persil’s current Original page specifies line B, 38.7 mL, for a regular load and line C for large or heavily soiled loads. Your physical bottle takes priority if its instructions differ.
For pretreatment, Persil describes applying detergent to the stain, rubbing it gently, and allowing five minutes before washing. Follow that product’s directions and the garment label; do not transfer a dwell time to another detergent or a delicate fabric.
Both manufacturers support cold-water washing for these liquids. That tells you cold water is an intended use, not that any cycle will erase any mark. Keep the washer setting within the clothing’s care instructions and choose the detergent dose for the actual load.
A dry-clean-only jacket is not a useful test item for two general laundry liquids. Keep care-label exceptions separate and ask about professional dry cleaning when appropriate.
Why 84 ounces does not automatically beat 80 ounces on value
The Tide 80-ounce HE listing and Persil 84-ounce Original listing each advertise 64 loads. Those package facts matter more for a first-cost comparison than the four-ounce difference.

At that assumed price, Persil costs less per ounce but exactly the same per advertised load. That is arithmetic, not evidence that the two labeled loads have identical cleaning performance.
For a real purchase, divide the price after discounts by the count on that exact bottle. Then consider how often you need the larger dose. If both detergents perform acceptably for your clothes and you like both scents, a lower cost at your usual dose is a reasonable tiebreaker. We do not have a matched current price sample that establishes either brand as the value winner.
Sensitive skin changes the products you should compare
Neither Original liquid is fragrance-free. Persil Free & Sensitive and Tide Free & Gentle are different formulas, not alternate names for these scented products. Persil identifies its Free & Sensitive option as free of fragrance and dyes.
The American Academy of Dermatology’s guidance for children with eczema favors fragrance- and dye-free laundry detergent. It does not supply a Tide-versus-Persil skin-tolerance ranking. A persistent rash calls for medical advice, not repeated experiments to identify an ingredient at home.

A practical way to decide at home
Make the question small enough to answer: “Does this detergent work for our usual washable shirts at its directed dose?” is more useful than “Which brand wins every stain?”
- Identify the bottles. Record the full product name, UPC, and dose instructions so a later purchase can be compared with what you actually used.
- Change one part of the routine. Keep the washer, appropriate cycle, and comparable load size consistent; avoid adding a new booster at the same time. Use each detergent’s own directed dose, not equal capfuls.
- Separate the observations. Note visible marks, the scent of dry fabric, and any need to rewash as different outcomes. Do not turn fragrance preference into a stain score.
- Record actual use. Keep track of doses and washes if household cost is your main concern. Do not assume every load matches the advertised bottle count.
This can help you decide what to buy again, but ordinary household loads contain different soils and fabrics. The observations are personal shopping information, not a controlled laboratory verdict. Do not use this process to investigate a suspected allergy.
