Where to Find the Best Donuts in San Diego
My first real job was in Encinitas, where I had my first VG Donut. VG stands for Very Good… which is true, but a serious understatement!! Their maple bars are the best you can ever eat… Once I had their melt in your mouth maple bar, I couldn’t eat any other!
When I stopped working in North County and was living in San Diego, I struggled to find a good maple bar. I tried other donut shops but none of them compare! Then, in the midst of a serious craving and desperate measures to find a good maple bar, I walked up to two police officers and sheepishly said, “hi there… I have a question for you and I do not mean any disrespect. I think you might know the answer to my question.” They smiled and said “what’s up?” I said “I’m new to this part of town and wanted to know the best donut store.” They laughed, kinda hard. Then, one of them said “Sorry, we are not from this part of town, we are helping at Qualcomm stadium today….” Then his partner added, “You might want to ask fatter cops next time”. We all laughed. I was kinda embarrassed. Especially since it didn’t really work out.
Years later I still can’t eat a maple bar anywhere else. Then, my husband’s best friends starting coming in from Arizona to visit and we sheepishly introduced them to the infamous VGs donut shop and guess what we do when we they come into town??? You got it! We go to VGs for our fill of Very Good Donuts!
Now, there are a lot of other popular donut shops, such as Mary’s Donuts in Santee -they have a birthday club. You can enjoy pretty good donuts at Christy’s Donuts in Point Loma Heights, Sunnys, located in National City, CA and the Donut Bar, down by Harbor Island. They all deserve an honorable mention.
